The entire Young Advisors (YA) team, including our finance manager, were commissioned in September 2011 to facilitate a consultation event of behalf of Clubs for Young People (CYP).
Sixty young people, from Clubs throughout the country, attended the 'Say Something' event as young representatives of the wider CYP movement. They all had their say on CYP's work, what the future should look like and ways in which young people could better inform the organisations progress. The young people also learnt about the principles of Participation - with 85% of the young participants saying that they were better informed about Participation as a result of the day.
As neutral facilitators from outside the CYP network the YA delivery team could really grapple with the ideas raised and discussed by the young people on the day. As experts in participation and dynamic delivery we created a fast paced and thorough programme which meant the young people were consistently engaged and that CYP gathered the relevant information. Each member of staff was supported by a Young Advisor who co facilitated all four of our workshops and helped engage people in the 'Innovation Stations'!
All the young people who contributed were also accredited with two AQA unit awards through the Young Advisors Charity AQA pathway!

But don't take it from us, hear it from two of the young people involved in the recent Say Something Event...
When told I was one of the lucky few to have been chosen from the youth club to go on this trip to London I was very excited. I was eager to learn about the issues affecting young people and what Clubs for Young People does.
We were put into groups ranging from all ages, genders and race. I found this very helpful, as it was an opportunity to create new links and bonds and understand and compare the different views of young people. The workshops allowed me to share and gain knowledge from seasoned professionals within the sector. It was a great way of working together and a great eye-opener particularly during the ‘what if’ workshop.
I would like to see more workshops like these, which engage young people from all over the UK. I find that together we can tackle lots of problems within society and by working together we create a safer and friendlier world. Coming from a diverse background it was great to be in an environment which promoted equality and diversity.
I believe experiences like this cannot be taught in the classroom environment and would like to be part of these events again in the future.
I got involved at the Say Something event after hearing about it from my youth leader, Richard Jennings, from Berkshire Association of Clubs for Young People.
I was keen to take part as it was an opportunity to share my views nationally, as well as giving me ideas to take back to the clubs where I volunteer.
It gave me an insight into different people’s views, and also that many clubs and projects are faced with the same challenges and barriers. Everyone worked really well together, with people being very open and honest about what they thought. I particularly enjoyed the electronic voting session, as it was a really modern idea in using technology to get people’s views.
From the day I not only learnt more about what participation is, but it has helped me to make changes in the clubs I work in. Many of the clubs talked about how they use their websites to give young people a place to voice their issues, and find out what is happening. I took this idea back and we have since set up a Facebook page for young people.
In terms of what I hope Clubs for Young People will take away from the day, I would like to see more help around funding, as this was a real barrier for many people. I would also hope that they run some kind of national event like this again, or that clubs locally can somehow feed into national decisions that are made.
